6 Different Types of Industrial Scales and Their Uses

Measuring the weight of various objects and substances is an essential requirement for quality control and process monitoring. As such, many businesses whether industrial or commercial rely on different types of weighing scales for this function. Depending on the need of a particular application, there is a specific type of weighing scale with the appropriate features and capacity suited for the intended use. For industrial purposes, here are some of the most commonly used types of weighing scales.

Bench scale

A bench scale is a typical kind of scale widely used in commercial and industrial settings. It is designed to sit on top of a table or a bench and may include a counting application aside from its standard weighing capacity. A bench scale can be an all-in-one device with an integrated platform and display, or a separate base accompanied by an indicator. Of the various types of industrial scales, a bench scale is one of the most standard pieces of weighing equipment used.

Floor scale

Another standard type of industrial scale used in warehouses, factories, and shipyards is a floor scale. It features a portable flat plan, or in some cases can be built-in and recessed into the flooring. Floor scales are built for harsh environments and will not quickly get shocked when overloaded. Floor scales allow for convenient access by forklifts to roll swiftly on and roll off crates after weighing.

Checkweigher

Industrial scales with a check weighing feature are vital in measuring the tolerance of goods. A standard application is in production facilities where the end product needs to be weighed to meet the expected bottom line. When packages are overweight, it could lead to company losses, while underweight commodities will compromise the quality.

Forklift scale

Using a forklift scale allows the operator to move, lift, weigh, and record a cargo in a single operation. The scale is securely attached to the forklift carriage making it possible to have reliable readings even when the load is tilted or off-center. Another feature of a forklift scale is that it can save time because the operator can simultaneously weigh and record data while the product is in transit.

Cargo scale

This type of industrial weight scale was designed originally for air freight delivery. Cargo scales are highly accurate and durable with additional features such as rollers, overload protection, and sloped sides for easier loading. These features of a cargo scale make it versatile for use in other industrial applications together with other industrial-type scales such as floor scales.

Truck scales or weighbridges

The purpose of a weighbridge is to measure the weight of various types of vehicles including trucks and buses. A weighbridge can be mounted at the same level as the road or raised with a ramp for access. A weighbridge can be constructed using steel or concrete, which makes it suitable for various demanding and robust applications. These truck scales are some of the most heavy-duty types of weighing scales used today. You can find them in shipyards or in some instances installed along highways.
